• This joint is easy to make using simple tools and power tools. You can use, for example, a powerful miter saw to make the bevel or angled cuts and easily make many cuts and joints. With a powered miter saw, you only need to set the angle and go on cutting. Thus, woodworkers with power tools like to use this joint.

Disadvantages of Miter Joint

• The miter joints are relatively weak compared to other woodworking joints, like the dovetail joints and box joints. Miter joints are best for smaller boards. It is not excellent for wide boards.

Glue a Gusset

You can strengthen miter joints by gluing a gusset plate along the joint or corner. To do this, cut a groove into the corner of your miter joint so that you can fit in a gusset plate across the joint. You can use your table saw equipped with the ordinary table saw blade or dado blade to make multiple cuts. You can affix the gusset plate to the joint using glue. Then, let the glue dry and trim down the plate afterward. 

Use Wire Nails

Another way to strengthen the miter joints is by using nail wires. You can use a nail gun to drive nail wires into the wood. Yet, before driving those wire nails, it will be best to predrill the surface where you will nail. This way, you will not split the surface. Begin by drilling tiny holes in the wood. Then, you can hammer the wire nails if you don’t have a nail gun. However, don’t expect this method to end up attractive because this option is not the most pleasant to look at option.  

Use a Pin Nailer

You can also use a pin nailer to drive the nails onto the wood. The use of this pin nailer can facilitate the securing of the joint, leaving tiny and nearly visible nails along the joints. 

You Can Use Spline

Splines are like the gusset. Nevertheless, you can position splines in the middle of the frame’s thickness. You can equip your table saw with a special sled to make this cut onto the frame. You should ensure that the cuts are precise and correct according to the spline’s width. Afterward, you can glue the spline into place and trim it when necessary.

How Do You Make the Miter Joint?

You got several ways to cut the wood to make a miter joint. You can use varying tools and the most common tools you can use are the following:

Use a Table Saw

Before making a cut using your table saw, mark the wood pieces you will cut according to the desired angle. You can utilize a pencil to mark the wood pieces. Besides, after marking the wood pieces, you can set the miter gauge. Ensure that the miter gauge got set at a 45° angle.

Then, lay the wood pieces you would like to cut on the cutting table and clamp. Make sure they are firmly against the surface. You can use a jig and clamp to prevent wood movement.

Once the wood is in place, you can move the wood piece along the table toward the saw blade and make the right cut. When done with cutting, you can start with the other wood piece, following the same steps and setup. 

Using a Hand Saw

If you don’t have a table or miter saw, you can use a hand saw to make miter cuts on the wood pieces. Yet, you should ensure that you cut precisely. You can use tools and jigs that could help you cut straightly at an angle using the hand saw.

The best thing to have when using a hand saw is a miter box. Just align the wood along the vertical slots of the miter box and use the right angle.

You can clamp the wood onto the miter box to prevent it from moving. Once the wood is set, you can start cutting using the hand saw along the vertical slots until you fully cut the wood piece. You can repeat this process with the other wood component.

Using a Chop Saw

You can also use a chop saw to make miter joints. You can begin by positioning the wood to be cut on the table while setting the cop saw at a 45° angle. You can loosen the chop saw’s lever and rotate it until you get it positioned at the correct angle. Then, lock this lever in position.

Ensure that before you begin cutting, you position the wood piece flat on the surface against the chop saw guard. When cutting, ensure that the second wood piece has the right direction relative to the first piece. This way, the wood pieces will complement each other when you join them.

Once done with cutting, you can fit the two pieces together and see if there are still gaps. If there is a slight gap, you can sand the surface to make them snugly fit together.

To join them, you can use a miter adhesive on one face of the cut wood. On the other face to be joined, you can use an activator to ensure that the adhesive will start working after applying pressure to the joint. 

Use a Biscuit Cutter

Once you’ve cut the wood, one of the most straightforward wasy to make a miter joint is using a biscuit cutter. Using the biscuit cutter, you can slice grooves onto each board, then slide a biscuit in between those grooves. This way, the surface area for gluing increases, and the biscuit ensure that the pieces are locked together.
